What was happening in the world
Philippi was a Roman colony settled by retired soldiers after the famous battle of 42 BC — a city intensely proud of Roman citizenship, Latin culture, and loyalty to Caesar. Paul writes from prison to a church in that colony, telling them their true citizenship is in heaven and their true Lord is a crucified and exalted Messiah.
