What was happening in the world
Ephesus was one of the largest cities in the empire, home to the temple of Artemis — one of the seven wonders of the ancient world — whose cult drove the local economy, as the silversmiths' riot in Acts 19 shows. To churches in that world of temples, magic, and imperial power, the letter presents Christ as Lord over every power.

The dividing wall between peoples is torn down in Christ. Peace isn't polite coexistence — it's the creation of one new humanity.
