What was happening in the world
First-century Judea lived under the Roman boot — occupied since Pompey's conquest in 63 BC, heavily taxed, ruled through client kings like Herod and governors like Pilate, with revolts simmering that would explode into war with Rome in AD 66–70. Jewish groups — Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, Zealots — argued fiercely over how to stay faithful under empire.
