What was happening in the world
A generation or more after the temple was rebuilt in 515 BC, Judah was still a small Persian province and the glorious restoration the earlier prophets promised hadn't happened. Disillusionment set in: sloppy worship, corrupt priests, broken marriages, exploited workers, and a cynical shrug — “what's the point of serving God?”
What this helps us see
God's promised arrival includes judgment against wage theft and oppression. Economic faithfulness is part of being ready to worship.
