What was happening in the world
Hosea preached in the northern kingdom's final decades — a time of booming trade, assassinated kings (four in fourteen years), and desperate alliances as Assyria closed in. Israel hedged its bets with Baal fertility worship and treaties with Egypt, and fell to Assyria in 722 BC.
