What was happening in the world
Written to believers from a Jewish background — likely in Italy — who were weary, socially shamed, and tempted to drift back to the synagogue, which had legal standing in Rome that Christianity lacked. The sermon argues from Israel's own Scriptures that what they have in Christ is better than everything they left behind.
