What was happening in the world
In 520 BC, eighteen years after the first exiles returned under Cyrus's decree, the temple still lay in ruins while people paneled their own houses. Judah was a poor province of the vast Persian Empire, and the empire-wide turmoil around Darius I's rise to power made the moment feel either hopeless or full of possibility.
