What was happening in the world
The book is shaped like the loyalty treaties empires like Assyria forced on smaller nations — but here the “great king” is the God who rescued slaves, not an emperor. Israel is camped on the plains of Moab while Canaan's walled cities and their gods wait across the Jordan River.
What this helps us see
Obedience grows out of remembering the rescue. “Love the Lord your God” becomes the center of worship, family, money, and justice — not just a rule to follow.
