What was happening in the world
Early Christianity ran on hospitality — traveling teachers stayed in believers' homes and were funded by churches, since inns were expensive and disreputable. That made hospitality a doctrinal issue: whoever you hosted, you endorsed, so discernment became a shared, financial responsibility.
What this helps us see
Love isn't boundaryless approval, and truth isn't loveless suspicion. The letter refuses to separate them.
