What was happening in the world
These songs were sung across nearly a thousand years of upheaval — David's wars, Solomon's temple, the Assyrian and Babylonian invasions, the exile, and the return under Persia. They are Israel's prayer book through every world the people passed through, carrying raw private emotion into public worship.
What this helps us see
Lament — crying out to God in pain — is an act of faith, not a failure of it. It brings protest, fear, and grief into the relationship instead of hiding them.
