What was happening in the world
Egypt's grip on Canaan had collapsed, and the Philistines and other newcomers were settling the coast, while raiders and rival kings pressed in on the hill-country tribes. With no king, no army, and no central place of worship, Israel spent roughly two centuries cycling through oppression, desperate prayer, and temporary rescue.
