What was happening in the world
In the world Genesis was born into — Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, Egypt — people told creation stories about gods at war, treated kings like gods, and offered sacrifices, sometimes even their own children. Genesis speaks straight into that world, but with a different answer: one good Creator who made every person in his image and chose to work through an ordinary wandering family instead of an empire.
What this helps us see
When God asked Abraham to offer Isaac, child sacrifice was a real practice in the nations around them. But God stopped it and provided a ram instead — showing he is not like those gods. He gives life; he doesn't demand it.
