What was happening in the world
The same persecuted Thessalonian church was now rattled by a rumor — possibly a forged letter — that the day of the Lord had already come. In a world without reliable news, a small minority group under pressure was vulnerable to exactly this kind of panic, speculation, and dropping out of ordinary work.
